The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) has repealed a provision requiring a proposed wind farm in Lake Erie shut down its turbines overnight from March 1 to Nov. 1.

Board members unanimously approved a motion by Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, to remove the requirement at the OPSB meeting Thursday.

A proposed wind energy project off the coast of Lake Erie is facing a lawsuit from two birding organizations. The groups allege not enough research has been done to determine the project’s environmental impact.

It’s been years in the making, but this month plans for a Lake Erie wind farm took a step, or at least a half-step, forward.

A long-running project to build a wind farm in Lake Erie has won approval from the staff of a state board overseeing electric facilities.

A Cleveland company trying to build a set of wind turbines on Lake Erie has been waiting since July for the state to certify its project. This month, the group filed another set of reports in the hopes of moving the process forward.


The Wind Energy industry has been taking off in the Midwest. The number of wind farms in the region has doubled since 2011. In Ohio though, new development worth up to 1.6 billion dollars has stalled because of the debate over set-back rules, the guidelines that govern the distance between wind farms and property.

Leaders in the wind energy industry says they cannot create new projects in Ohio, claiming they’re essentially handcuffed by stiff regulations over where turbines can be placed.

A new proposal would loosen those restrictions.
