Ohio State University says 12,400 students will qualify for new need-based grants next year as part of the school's effort to make itself more affordable to low- and middle-income families.

Governor Kasich wants to reduce the cost of public college tuition, and has promised to “take an ax” to the schools that fail to lower student costs. Average student debt is almost $30,000, and Kasich has formed a task force to find ways to reduce the burden. We’ll discuss where tuition money goes, and if it’s possible to fund education more economically.

Ohio State Considers Tuition Hike

Mar 23, 2010

After four years without a tuition increase, Ohio State students face the possibility. WOSU reports OSU administrators have proposed a 7 percent increase by next fall.

Ohio State student Joe Forrest shook his head and grumbled "more money" when he heard about the proposed tuition increase.

While most students will get the news of a possible tuition hike next week when they return from spring break, others, like Forrest, already are contemplating how it might impact them.

"It's all on a loan anyway, so it will be fine," Forrest said.

Ohio State Will Maintain Tuition Freeze

Jul 14, 2009

Ohio State University officials announced Tuesday they will maintain a freeze on tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year. The state budget proposal approved Monday by the Ohio House and Senate grants 4-year and 2-year schools authority to raise tuition by as much as 3.5%.

OSU's proposed tuition increase would mean an additional $477 per year for in-state undergraduate students. At the May trustees meeting, Budget Director William Shkurti said the six percent increase is necessary to compensate for a decrease in state funding.

"Our state support is growing less than two percent this year, so most of the difference we make up through tuition, although we also try to reduce expenses wherever we can, do private fundraisers wherever we can, and then the tuition increase fills in the difference."

Ohio State tuition increases affect undergraduates

Sep 2, 2003

Ohio State students will return this fall with bigger bills to pay due to the 9 percent tuition increase put into place this summer. WOSU's Anne Allred caught up with summer quarter graduates to find out how higher tuition is straining students. The cost of an Ohio State degree has been rising for over half a decade. Before this summer's 9 percent increase, tuition costs have risen almost 69 percent in the last five years. Matthew Carroll, an out of state student, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism on Friday.
