In Clark County, work is underway on a project some in the city see as critical to the long-hoped-for revival of downtown Springfield. It’s a nearly $7 million parking garage.

The garage is attracting a lot of buzz, but as WYSO Clark County reporter Tom Stafford, who also writes for the Springfield News-Sun, reports, in order for the project to succeed in promoting development, three critical elements need to be in place.

Stafford spoke with WYSO Managing Editor Jess Mador.

With a new state-of-the-art detect and avoid system, the Federal Aviation Administration has given the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) permission to fly its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) beyond visual line of sight at the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport. This permission is called a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA). Ohio hopes to get its own permission but until then may partner with AFRL.

In the decades leading up to the Civil War, the Underground Railroad ferried enslaved African Americans in the South to freedom in the northern United States and Canada. And Southwest Ohio, bordering the slave states of Virginia and Kentucky, played an especially important role in the clandestine network.

One stop along the Underground Railroad still stands in Springfield. Preservationists have spent nearly two decades restoring the historic Gammon House and say it holds a message for future generations.

There are signs the tourism business may be on the upswing in Clark County. Tourist-related revenue there is up by more than $100 million since 2010. That growth is also fueling a welcome boost in hiring in Springfield, as new businesses and attractions pop up, enticing visitors to spend.

In this town, he’s a hero. Community Voices Producer Leo DeLuca has a story about Davey “The Springfield Rifle” Moore.

At the Springfield Beckley Municipal Airport, crews will begin installing a new kind of radar in June that will allow air traffic controllers to see a combination of planes and unmanned aerial vehicles The Air Force and the state of Ohio are footing the $5 million radar bill in first-of-its-kind testing that both parties hope will lead to Federal Aviation Administration approval for "beyond line of sight" flight.

Numbers show Clark County has seen job growth in 2016, but it's unclear whether this positive economic outlook may be impacted by the city of Springfield’s ongoing budget troubles.

Much of the anger and anxiety in the 2016 election are fueled by the sense that economic opportunity is slipping away for many Americans. This week, as part of NPR's collaborative project with member stations, A Nation Engaged, we're asking the question: What can be done to create economic opportunity for more Americans?

The Simpsons movie debuts this summer. The animated series is set in a fictitious "Springfield." But no one knows whether that's Springfield, Ohio, Oregon, Illinois, Missouri, Massachusetts or where. So the film's producers want those real-life cities to compete to host the premiere of the movie. But some Ohio lawmakers aren't big fans of the animinated series.

The movie promises to reveal the "true" Springfield.
