With Ohio consumer confidence continuing to soar, economic forecasters said Monday they expect Ohio shoppers to increase holiday spending by 3.2 percent over last year.

The handbag and accessory company Thirty-One Gifts has announced a big move: While its headquarters will stay nearby, moving from Easton to New Albany, its distribution center will relocate to Texas, shedding 800 Central Ohio warehouse jobs in the process.

An already-bustling area of Delaware County is about to get a lot busier.

Developers on Thursday announced plans for Planet Oasis, a 350-acre, $2 billion entertainment park near Tanger Outlet Mall, just off Interstate 71 near Sunbury.

The small village of West Jefferson will soon be home to Seattle-based tech giant Amazon’s sixth Ohio distribution center. Preparations are already underway on the massive "fulfillment center" building, slated for Route 40 between Springfield and Columbus. 

Amazon’s new, more than 850,000-square-foot, $175 million facility has been in the works for just a few months, West Jefferson officials say, and the project is moving at an accelerated pace.

Central Ohio may be an underdog in the competition for Amazon's second North American headquarters, but the online retailer is at least bringing another order fulfillment center here.

Across Ohio, colleges and universities are celebrating their spring commencements this month, with some like Ohio State University celebrating the largest graduating classes in their history, but a report from the non-profit National Association of Colleges and Employers shows both private and public sector employers expect to hire fewer graduates this year.

“The employers said they plan to decrease their hiring by just 1.3 percent,” NACE Research Manager Andrea Koncz reported.

Last year was one of the worst for the retail industry, with record setting bankruptcies and store closings — 8,000 across multiple national chains. And so far, things are not looking up in 2018.

On Thursday, Sears Holdings Corp., the parent company of Sears and Kmart, announced it is closing 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears locations, as it grapples with weaker in-store sales.
