In 2012, two high school football players raped an unconscious underage girl. By the next morning, hundreds of texts and social-media posts crisscrossed the eastern Ohio community of Steubenville. 

Many of the posts included photographs of the girl, which crossed the line into child pornography.

The case attracted worldwide attention and prompted conversations across the country about the misogynistic atmosphere of Steubenville. 

Today on All Sides, we revisit the story and the lessons with documentary filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman. Her new film “Roll Red Roll” premiered Jun 17th on PBS.

Nicole Dempsey remembers crying in a pew at church, watching a video of a woman with long dark hair and deep brown eyes. The woman was talking about her abortion, and how a local organization called Heartbeats helped her heal.

Gov. Mike DeWine is urging state lawmakers to end the time limit on criminal charges for rape and sexual assault, which Democrats have been proposing for years. The leader of the Ohio House says there’s a chance that will happen.

Opponents of abortion rights have a long history of supporting abortion bans with three major exceptions: when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or when a woman's life is at risk.

But fueled by momentum from the passage of a restrictive abortion law in Alabama, a coalition of anti-abortion-rights groups released a letter Wednesday asking Republican officials to "reconsider decades-old talking points" on exceptions to such laws.

The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center "wholeheartedly" supports a proposal from Governor Mike DeWine to lift the statute of limitations for rape and other sex crimes. Ohio allows someone to be charged for rape within 25 years of committing the crime. 

The governor made the proposal Monday following the release of a report detailing sexual abuse of male students by a former Ohio State University sports doctor from 1978 to 1998.

A Franklin County grand jury has indicted a 39-year old man for last month's kidnapping and rape of a woman in Franklinton.

The documentary “I Am Evidence” looked at how cities handled testing rape kits that sat shelved for years, and Cleveland played a part.

The filmmakers compared different cities’ approaches and resources, and they found Cleveland ahead of some others, particularly with the work of Cuyahoga County's Sexual Assault Kit Task Force.

Attorney General Mike DeWine announced Friday that state officials have cleared Ohio's backlog of untested rape kits. The state has been working through nearly 14,000 kits since 2011.

Four years ago, Cait Hogan woke up in her bed on a Sunday morning after a night of drinking in the small college town of Athens, Ohio. Her entire body hurt. Her arms and legs were covered in blood. She realized she’d been raped.
