Statehouse Damaged As Nearby Protest Spills On To Capitol Square

UPDATE: Gov. Mike DeWine will hold a press conference to speak about "the events yesterday and this morning at the Ohio Statehouse and downtown Columbus" at 2pm Friday. It'll air live on the Ohio Channel.

A protest that started at an intersection near the Ohio Statehouse spilled over onto the grounds last night, resulting in damage to the 159-year old building - which has been the site of many demonstrations and public events over the years.

Fifty years ago, Columbus came this close to losing its beloved Ohio Theatre to the wrecking ball and rendering the theater’s Mighty Morton organ homeless.

This Sunday you can raise your voice along with the organ called “the voice of the Ohio Theatre” in a sing-along marking the 50th anniversary of what, in February 1969, was billed as the final performance in the Ohio Theatre and the subsequent founding of the theater’s owner, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, CAPA.

The Columbus Symphony and Opera Columbus present Giuseppe Verdi's Aida at the Ohio Theatre, at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4. Rossen Milanov conducts.

I'm delighted that two fine local artists are playing featured roles: Brian Banion (Ramfis) and Robert Kerr (Pharaoh) — not to mention the superb all-volunteer Columbus Symphony Chorus, conducted by Ronald Jenkins.

This production of Aida will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 29 on Classical 101.

Here in Central Ohio, we are fortunate to hear the Mighty Morton theater organ on a regular basis. Clark Wilson is the current resident organist at the Ohio Theatre, where the organ has lived since the theater opened in 1928.
