A former Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper accused of forcing female motorists into sexual acts in exchange for dropping traffic charges was sentenced to five years in federal prison Thursday for violating their civil rights.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says its troopers have written fewer tickets on some stretches of highway where the speed limit was bumped to 70 mph earlier this year. The patrol says it issued about 19,000 speeding tickets in July, August and September on the 12 sections of rural interstate where the speed limit was increased on July 1. That's fewer than troopers wrote during the same period in the past two years. However, compared with the five-year average from 2008 to 2012 during those months, troopers wrote about 500 more tickets this year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The State Highway Patrol is expanding its presence in Ohio's three largest metropolitan areas with around-the-clock operations at posts near Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus for the first time in its nearly 80-year history. The patrol will staff 24/7 operations in Hamilton, Cuyahoga and Franklin counties beginning June 3. The changes are part of a larger effort to more efficiently organize patrol resources and some existing positions to better crack down on dangerous driving.
