Columbus City Council will act tonight on a huge new development on city-owned land in the Short North Neighborhood.

The development plans for the North Market Tower call for a 26-story building to rise from what is now the North Market parking lot.

A previously-shelved plan to build a tower in the North Market parking lot is back, with some significant revisions. At 28 stories tall, developers’ second draft of the building will be seven fewer than the original, and about $75 million more expensive.

Kay Davenport just knew it was time to go. After more than 20 years of running her North Market Cookware shop, she wanted to retire and travel the world.

What she didn’t know was the uncertain future of the iconic Columbus market would make it impossible to find a buyer for her business.

More than a month after the ambitious proposal was unveiled, critics of a plan to replace the North Market parking lot with a 35-story mixed-used building got a chance to gripe to city leaders and developers at a community forum on Tuesday.

There’s just one problem, says archeologist Ryan Weller.
