It seems there is a new tradition ahead of the big Michigan game. Ohio State University students woke up Friday morning to find that Mirror Lake had been drained overnight.

Ohio State University students are looking for a new ritual to replace the Mirror Lake jump before the annual Ohio State-Michigan Game this weekend.

The long-held tradition of jumping in to Mirror Lake the Tuesday before the Ohio State-Michigan game came to an abrupt halt in 2015, where one student died from injuries sustained during the lake jump.

Ohio State University announced on Tuesday that it will be undergoing a restoration of historic Mirror Lake.  The 18-month renovation will restore wetlands to the lakeshore and include renovations to nearby buildings.

Standing near the lake, WOSU’s Sam Hendren spoke today with OSU associate vice president Keith Myers about the upcoming renovations.

The Ohio State student government body voted last week to support the ban on the annual Mirror Lake jump by students before the Michigan game.  It came after the death of 22 year old Austin Singletary of Dayton who broke his neck during this year's jump.

Ohio State Seeks To End Mirror Lake Jump Following Death

Ohio State University said it will seek to end the annual Mirror Lake jump on campus following the death of a student at this year's event. 

University leadership said it will work with the campus community to end the annual event, according to a statement from the university. Austin Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton, passed away following the jump, according to the university.

Coroner Says Ohio State Student Died From Broken Neck

Preliminary autopsy results indicate Ohio State student Austin Singletary died from a broken neck during the annual Mirror Lake jump on Ohio State's campus. 

Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton, was pulled from the lake early Wednesday morning. He died at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center later Wednesday morning.
