In two weeks, mental health and addiction services for low-income Ohioans will be moved into Medicaid managed care. Many behavioral health and family services providers say this huge change is straining their finances. But the group that represents Ohio’s health insurers says the move can’t be delayed.

Suicide on the Rise

Last week, chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain and designer Kate Spade both passed away from suicide. The Centers for Disease Control also reported a nearly 30 percent increase in suicide deaths in the United States from 1999 until 2016. Experts have linked the rise to lack of mental health resources as well as other factors such as inadequate coping skills.

Today, we discuss the CDC's report and the impact high-profile suicide deaths can have on the public.

The Zelma Watson George Community Center sits in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Cleveland. After school, a group of teenagers plays a game of three on three in the indoor basketball court as the recreation center’s manager, Ieshia Harrison, looks on.

DeVonte Jones began to show signs of schizophrenia as a teenager. His first public episode was nine years ago at a ball game at Wavering Park in Quincy, Illinois.

“He snapped out and just went around and started kicking people,” said Jones’ mother Linda Colon, who now lives in Midlothian in the Chicago suburbs.

The state is moving mental health and addiction services for low-income Ohioans into Medicaid managed care by July 1, but providers say this huge redesign is straining their finances and could shut them down. But a key lawmaker involved in legislation relating to this redesign says it’s unlikely to be delayed.

Minority groups such as African Americans and Latinos are often overlooked by the mental health community. Lack of availability, cultural stigma of mental illness, and discriminatory practices are among the factors that affect access to proper treatment for minorities.

We'll look at how these issues impact minority communities and what can be done to improve access to treatment.

In the wake of a possible suicide, and another possible attempted suicide, from the same parking garage in one week, Ohio State students are criticizing access to mental health care on campus and questioning what more can be done.

In his final State of the State address Tuesday, Kasich announced a new $112 million facility will replace the current Twin Valley Behavioral Health Hospital in Columbus, which was built in 1977. The state psychiatric hospital is the busiest in Ohio, and also one of the oldest.
