The Ohio Department of Commerce has chosen the 12 companies that will be given licenses to operate large-scale medical marijuana growing farms. They also chose a final small grower, rounding out the list of 24 companies authorized to produce medical marijuana under a new system expected to go live by September.

On Friday, the Ohio Department of Commerce will stop accepting applications for its first crop of medical marijuana dispensary licenses. Although only 60 licenses will be issued, some industry insiders estimate that applications will number in the hundreds.

After Yarly Raygoza attended a drug prevention program at the Boys & Girls Club in Westminster, Calif., last year, she used what she learned to talk a few friends out of using marijuana.

The 14-year-old took the class again this year but worries that counseling her friends will become more difficult.

Two of Ohio’s newly licensed medical marijuana cultivators plan to open facilities in Akron, and several more could be coming to Northeast Ohio as well.

Ohio has chosen its first 11 growers for its medical marijuana program, including one that says it plans to open a grow site in Columbus' Milo-Grogan neighborhood.

Ohio Colleges Wade Cautiously Into Medical Marijuana Business

Ohio is one of eight states rolling out medical marijuana programs. When Ohio lawmakers passed the state’s medical marijuana law last year, one of the provisions was that Ohio colleges and universities should be the first to test the state’s medical marijuana supply.

Officials in Ohio say they don't expect to issue the state's first medical marijuana cultivator licenses until around November, at least a month later than growers expected.
