Some Ohio lawmakers are pushing five different pieces of legislation they say will deal with the state’s opioid abuse problem in a comprehensive way.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the illegal drug trade in ways not seen since World War II, affecting nearly every country and many different kinds of drugs, according to a report compiled by the United Nations.

While lawmakers from both parties battle over politics, there is some movement on bipartisan efforts to fight the deadly drug fentanyl in Congress.

Thirty-seven people are under indictment for money laundering and trafficking fenatnyl, cocaine, methamphetamine following raids last week on a jewelry shop and an automotive store.

A Chinese court has imposed a suspended death sentence on one accused drug trafficker and hit eight others with life sentences and other prison terms, after the nine Chinese citizens pleaded guilty to smuggling fentanyl to the U.S.

Gov. Mike DeWine created the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center with an executive order on Wednesday.

Methamphetamine, an illegal drug that sends the body into overdrive, is surging through the United States. Federal drug data provided exclusively to NPR show seizures of meth by authorities have spiked, rising 142% between 2017 and 2018.

After a long trial held under heightened security at the federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., a jury has found Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, one of the world's most notorious drug kingpins who led Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, guilty on all 10 counts related to drug trafficking.

The 61-year-old faces the possibility of life in prison.

Tuesday's verdict ended a dramatic trial that started in November and was filled with explosive testimony from Guzmán's former cartel associates.

Gov. John Kasich has signed a bill into law that increases penalties for drug trafficking and some other drug offenses when the drug involved is a fentanyl-related compound.

President Trump has announced harsher penalties for drug trafficking offenses, including the death penalty. The penalties are part of a larger proposal laid out by the White House to combat the opioid epidemic. The proposal also includes funding for education about substance abuse and expansion of access to treatment.

We'll look at what the proposal contains, the impact it will have on the opioid crisis, and appropriate punishment for drug traffickers.

Nine of 12 individuals charged in U.S. District Court in Ohio in a narcotics and money laundering scheme are in custody following a year-long FBI investigation. More than 40 others are charged in San Diego, Columbus, Lexington, Kansas and Washington in a case with ties to the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel.

A Cincinnati man is facing 20 to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to trafficking heroin laced with carfentanil. Phillip Watkins was charged with selling tainted heroin and attempting to murder a witness he thought was going to testify against him.

Mexico has extradited to the United States its most notorious drug trafficker, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, according to statements from officials of both countries.

A statement by the U.S. Justice Department says Guzman landed Thursday evening at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, N.Y. The department also says he faces six separate indictments around the country for crimes "in connection with his leadership of the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel."
