Ohio State University head football coach Urban Meyer has been placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into what Meyer knew about alleged abuse by an assistant coach.

Ohio State University head football coach Urban Meyer said on Tuesday that when he hired Zach Smith in 2012, he knew about allegations that Smith abused his then-wife, who was several weeks pregnant at the time of the alleged assault.

Ohio State has fired receivers coach Zach Smith, who was charged last week with misdemeanor criminal trespass after a dispute with his ex-wife.

Coach Urban Meyer announced Smith's dismissal in a two-sentence statement on Monday.

In Ohio, it only takes one act of violence to make you eligible for a civil protection order if the courts agree there’s a clear and credible threat of physical harm or past violence. Not all protection orders deal with guns, either. Some orders just tell people to stay away from their accuser.

But there’s a problem: Sometimes, offenders avoid being served their protection orders.

States across the political spectrum have turned recently to a new kind of gun control measure, known as red flag laws or extreme risk protection orders. They allow for the seizure of guns from potentially dangerous people.

Gov. John Kasich has signed into law a bill that strengthens Ohio’s domestic violence laws by closing loopholes and allowing victims access to more services.

Franklin County Municipal Court will now offer LGBT-specific domestic violence intervention. Municipal Court Judges Eileen Paley and James O’Grady devised the program after same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states. 

Hamilton County

Hamilton County became the first in Ohio to launch a new technology-based warning system to help protect survivors of domestic violence.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said the bureau completed its investigation of White House staff secretary Rob Porter in July, nearly seven months before Porter was forced to resign over allegations of domestic violence from two ex-wives.

That appears to be at odds with the account from White House, which said the Porter investigation was "not complete" at the time of last week's ouster.

A bill designed to help protect victims of dating violence that lawmakers said was a high priority is on its way to the Senate.

Beginning in January 2018, Cincinnati Police will dispatch a member of a newly created Women Helping Women special team called DVERT (Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team) to the scene of domestic violence and sexual assault crimes.

Gov. John Kasich has formally signed what’s become known as “Judy’s Law.” It is legislation named for a Columbus woman that imposes longer prison sentences on attackers who intentionally disfigure their victims by using accelerants to set them on fire.
