After a three-year break, Ohio is set to execute a death row inmate later this month. Ronald Phillips was convicted of raping and killing his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter in Akron in 1993. He's scheduled for execution July 26, but opponents of the death penalty continue pressing Governor John Kasich for a last-minute reprieve.

Franklin County prosecutor Ron O'Brien will pursue the death penalty against Brian Golsby, the man accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering Ohio State University senior Reagan Tokes in early February.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the state of Texas has been using an unconstitutional and obsolete medical standard for determining whether those convicted of murder are exempt from the death penalty because of mental deficiency.

The 5-to-3 decision came in the case of Bobby James Moore, who killed a store clerk in Houston in 1980 during a botched robbery.

Since the execution of Dennis McGuire in 2014, the state of Ohio has worked to acquire new lethal injection drugs for its 29 currently scheduled executions. The first lethal injection in Ohio since then  was supposed to take place today, but on Thursday a federal judge rejected Ohio's current lethal injection cocktail, stating the current method is cruel and unusual punishment. Today we'll discuss the state of the death penalty in Ohio and around the country with a panel of guests.

A coalition of anti-death penalty advocates are hoping Gov. John Kasich will once again delay the execution of a death row inmate next month. They rallied at the Ohio Statehouse where religious leaders tried to appeal to Kasich’s faith.
