Demolition is starting at the old site of Columbus Castings, a complex with 44 acres under roof and several more acres of area grounds.

The Columbus Model Railroad Club is 82 years old this year.  For almost 50 years, the club has met in a building at Columbus Castings.  Now that the foundry has been sold the club will probably have to move; forcing them to leave their beloved model railroad behind.

It's been about four months since the previous owner of Columbus Castings, the century-old South Side steel foundry, filed for bankruptcy. The new owners plan to keep the plant closed, so about 800 workers needed find work elsewhere. We followed two of the laid-off workers who unexpectedly found themselves in the job market.

After the century old steel plant closed this summer many had hoped it might reopen under new ownership. Now the plant has been purchased and the new owners say that they will not restart the foundry, but they do promises to clean-up and develop the site.

The parent company of Columbus Castings has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  Constellation Enterprises LLC said the foundry, located on South Parsons Ave., would halt production there as it “pursues a sale of the business.”
