The number of Ohio kids enrolled in benefit programs like Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has dropped.

Advocates say Ohio's children need more than what they’re getting from Gov. Mike DeWine’s first budget, but they’re praising what they see so far. The advocates are also cautioning lawmakers who may decide to cut the budget based on forecasts of economic growth.

Ohio ranks 35th in the nation for child poverty. According to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau, about one in five Ohio children, or roughly 513,000, lived in poverty last year.
