Name Recognition

A recent Quinnipiac poll that measured President Trump's favorability rating also looked at his potential Democratic opponents for 2020. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who has said he's seriously considering a run for president, made the list with high favorability.

But the poll also found that 77 percent of respondents didn’t know enough about him to form an opinion.

Backfire

Gov. John Kasich vetoed a pro-gun bill that would have changed the way self-defense cases play out in court.

The legislation is what’s left of the “Stand Your Ground” bill, after the Ohio Senate removed a section that would have repealed the "duty to retreat" before using lethal force in self-defense. African-American legislators criticized the measure, saying it would disproportionately impact people of color.

It's yet to be seen how Kasich will vote on two abortion bills passed by the legislature. The Ohio House and Senate are planning to return to the Statehouse after Christmas to potentially override Kasich's vetoes.

Snollygoster Of The Week

We’re launching a new segment where we look for one person or group that embodies the term Snollygoster, an intelligent yet unprincipled politician.

This week's pick is the organization opposing a new ticket tax that would fund the arts in Columbus. They picked a shrewd name for their cause, Advocates for Responsible Taxation, or ART.
