In response to an outpouring of requests from people who want to do something during the COVID-19 health crisis, Premier Health has announced several ways people can help in recovery efforts.

Their first call-out is to people who have recovered from COVID-19. The healthcare organization is asking survivors to donate blood plasma — which contains antibodies that may be useful in fighting the infection in others. Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of blood plasma.

According to Premier, “studies have shown the use of convalescent plasma has had some success in reducing symptoms and death in past outbreaks, but its overall effectiveness has not yet been proven in rigorous clinical trials. Preliminary evidence from the current outbreak in China suggests that plasma therapy appears to help sick patients fight off COVID-19 until they can develop their own antibodies.”

Premier is also looking for donations of medical supplies, equipment, and financial support, even food for healthcare workers. Gowns, face masks, gloves, respirators and ventilator tubing are in especially high demand.

Donations can be arranged by email at helpinghands@premierhealth.com. Premier is asking that donations not be dropped off directly at hospital entrances, emergency departments or physician office locations.

You can find more information on COVID-19 through Premier's website.
