Columbus Ensemble The Early Interval Performs Music By Women Of The Baroque Era

Apr 11, 2019

“I think of her as the Beyoncé of the Baroque.”

That’s Early Interval soprano Elizabeth McConnaughey’s take on Barbara Strozzi, a woman who, centuries ago, bucked convention by becoming a composer and a single mom at a time when women just didn’t do these things.

Marking the 400th anniversary of Strozzi’s birth, the Columbus-based early music ensemble The Early Interval and guest harpsichordist Alexandra Snyder Dunbar joined me in the Classical 101 studio recently to give us a preview of their upcoming concert, Musica Femina, featuring music by women composers of the Baroque era.

Presented by Early Music in Columbus, the concert takes place Friday, April 12 at 8 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Seminary’s Gloria Dei Chapel.

Watch this video to hear some of the delicious music on this program and to learn more about three women Baroque composers who should be household names. Really.
