Columbus Crew SC is headed home after the soccer club fell to Minnesota United in penalty kicks Tuesday night, during the knockout round of Major League Soccer’s "MLS Is Back" tournament.
Tyler Miller made a key save in the third round of the penalty shootout, Chase Gasper scored the winning shot in the fifth round and Minnesota United advanced past Columbus in the tournament in Orlando.
Minnesota and Columbus played to a 1-1 draw in regulation, but the Loons were a perfect 5-for-5 in the shootout and Miller came up with the one big save needed. Minnesota United will face San Jose in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Saturday.
Columbus’ regulation goal came from Gyasi Zardes, who scored on a rebound of his own penalty kick to tie the match late.
The Crew made it to the knockout round after winning all three games of group play against Cincinnati FC, the New York Red Bulls and Atlanta United without giving up a single goal.
After the tournament ends, MLS plans to continue its regular season with a revised schedule in home markets, followed by the playoffs and MLS Cup. The schedule will be developed at a later date.
