The Cleveland Browns bounced back from their week 4 loss against the Oakland Raiders with a big win against the Baltimore Ravens. With a record of 2-2-1, every game has been a close call, and WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says that's exactly what's making it fun for Browns fans.

The View From Pluto: The Indians' Era of Uncertainty Begins

Oct 10, 2018

The Indians are facing an offseason of changes following their early exit from the playoffs. Cleveland was swept by Houston in the American League Division Series on Monday. It was likely the last game for this group of players.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says the team struggled to recapture the magic of that 2016 World Series run.

The Houston Astros scored a flurry of runs to beat the Cleveland Indians 11-3 at Progressive Field. The Astros three game sweep in the American League Division Series ends Cleveland's season earlier than fans had hoped.

After two straight postseason appearances, Columbus Blue Jacket fans enter a new season with a relatively-new feeling: A reasonable expectation to make the playoffs.

A quarter of the season down, the Browns have already drastically improved from last year with a record of 1-2-1. Still, WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says the team doesn't know how to win close games.

The Browns' week four 45-42 overtime loss to Oakland was the second game the team has lost this season by fewer than three points. And, it's becoming a bad pattern. "Right now the Browns are 1-9-1 in games decided by three or fewer points,” Pluto says.

The players

The Indians enter the postseason as underdogs, despite running away with the central division title months ago. It’s a stark contrast to last year, when many experts picked the Indians to win the World Series. They ended up losing early to the Yankees.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says the Indians' early 2017 exit versus their improbable 2016 World Series run shows how difficult it is to predict the playoffs in baseball.

But, he says in baseball, once a team wins its division, anything can happen. "Because then you hope to get hot in October."

Since Amazon announced Tuesday that sportscasters Hannah Storm and Andrea Kremer would become the first all-women team to call NFL games, the pair has faced public backlash.

The Cavs began training camp this week on a much different tone. The face of the franchise, LeBron James, departed in the off season for the L.A. Lakers.

Terry Pluto said there's lots of mixed emotions. Some players are excited to see more playing time, while fans are bracing for a season of uncertainty.

Pluto says with James gone, there's no guarantee the team will even make the playoffs.

The View From Pluto: The Baker Mayfield Era Begins

Sep 26, 2018

The Baker Mayfield era has begun in Cleveland. The Browns officially named Mayfield the starting quarterback after he led the team to its first win since 2016.

Mayfield entered last week’s game when starter Tyrod Taylor suffered a concussion while the team was losing to the Jets.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto thinks back to the NFL draft when Mayfield wasn't his first or second pick.

The Cleveland Cavaliers start practice for the new season Tuesday, the first time in four years without star LeBron James.

The Cleveland Browns made a rare visit to the win column Thursday night, ending a streak of frustration and futility by beating another NFL team for the first time since Christmas Eve 2016. The win set off celebrations – including a promotion campaign that had offered free beer if the team won a game in 2018.

The University of Akron football team won its biggest game in more than a century over the weekend. The Zips stunned Northwestern, 39-34. Akron hadn't beaten a Big Ten team since 1894, when it beat Ohio State, 12-6.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto said it was a remarkable come-from-behind win.

"They were down 21-3 at the half," Pluto said. "So, Northwestern probably thought it was over." Then, the Zips scored 36 second half points, 21 of them defensive.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have given coach John Tortorella a two-year contract extension.

The Browns and their fans are still trying to make sense of the team’s season-opening tie with the Steelers. It's the first time a Browns game ended in an overtime tie since 1989. Still, Sunday’s stalemate ended the team’s 17-game losing streak and showed the team is making progress.

The Cleveland Browns open their season at home this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After failing to win a single game last season, the Browns are heading into this season hoping for a fresh start with two new quarterbacks.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto thinks the team can improve from their 0-16 season.

Really, It Can’t Get Any Worse
