A winter storm has brought heavy snowfall to the Cincinnati area and other parts of southern Ohio, closing schools and creating hazardous travel conditions.

Most of southern Ohio will be under a winter storm warning until at least midday Thursday. The National Weather Service said some parts of the area would have up to a foot of snow accumulation.

It’s going to be another week of quickly-changing weather in Central Ohio.

After a weekend of heavy snowfall, forecasts call for highs near 28 degrees on Monday.

A light blanket of snow fell on Central Ohio before dawn. The wintry weather has forced some area schools to delay opening this morning, including:

Road conditions are variable this morning as salt crews treated some sections of major highways overnight.

North Union Schools in Union County are operating on a two hour delay.

Late Winter Storm Bears Down On Ohio

Forecasters say Ohio is in the path of a major winter storm that could bring double-digit snowfalls to areas along Interstate 71.

While most Ohio counties are under a winter storm warning, the National Weather Service says the heaviest snow will be dumped in a band stretching from Cincinnati through Columbus and on to Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown.

The forecasters say 10 inches or more could accumulate over a 24-hour period ending at midday Saturday.

Light snow began falling before dawn in Central Ohio. The National Weather Service has posted a snow advisory for the region. Forecasters say an additional one to three inches will fall before the storm moves to the Appalachian Mountains.

The new snow is forcing another round of school delays and some closures.

Snow is falling across Ohio this morning. The National Weather Service says reports an inch or more on the ground with another inch or two on the way. Road crews in Franklin and surrounding counties are salting and plowing major throughfares. The Ohio Highway Patrol describes highway conditions as "wet and slick." Accidents on interstates are beginning to slow traffic this hour. The season's first snowfall has also delayed or canceled some classes for area schools:
