Weekly Highlights for The Week of August 21st- 27th

Aug 18, 2016

Every week is concert week on Classical 101, and we've got the playlists to prove it. Whether you adventure through the sounds of the United States with Jennifer Hambrick's The American Sound, or join Christopher Purdy for music made by musicians you might even see at your local grocery store with Music in Mid-Ohio; there's something on-air for everyone. Check out what's in store for this week!

Sunday, August 21st:

1:00 PM, Music in Mid-Ohio with Christopher Purdy

Westerville Symphony conducted by Peter Stafford Wilson for Ibert's Divertissement.

8:00 PM, Musica Sacra with Christopher Purdy

Poulenc's Stabat Mater was written in 1950 following the death of Poulenc's dear friend artist Christian Bérard. Rather than choosing the more typical Requiem text for the work, Poulenc was inspired to use the medieval Stabat Mater text following a visit to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour in southwestern France. The piece was quite well-received throughout Europe and the US, and even earned the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Choral Work of the year.

Monday, August 22nd:

7:00 PM, Essential Classics with Christopher Purdy

Thursday, August 25th:

Gounod Symphony No. 2

Friday, August 26th:

Mahler: Symphony No. 3 is the longest piece in the typical orchestral repertoire. Clocking in between 90 to 105 minutes, this is truly a magnum opus. Don't let that discourage you from listening, though! I highly recommend finding a quiet room to listen either on-air or on the WOSU mobile app.

Each movement is unique and has its own golden points:

  1. "Pan Awakes, Summer Marches In"
  2. "What the Flowers in the Meadow Tell Me"
  3. "What the Animals in the Forest Tell Me"
  4. "What Man Tells Me"
  5. "What the Angels Tell Me"
  6. "What Love Tells Me"

Saturday, August 27th:

1:00 PM, Opera and More with Christopher Purdy

Wagner's Das Rheingold

6:00 PM, The American Sound with Jennifer Hambrick

Aaron Copland’s music for The Red Pony

7:00 PM, Fretworks with John Rittmeyer

Carnival of Venice by Tarrega
