Ohioans Leaving Federal Prison Now Getting Picture IDs

Feb 7, 2017

Federal prison officials are partnering with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to get inmates leaving federal prison a picture ID.

The program started last month.  Federal probation officers get exiting inmates a picture ID that they can take to the BMV and trade for a traditional state ID.

The policy covers any exiting federal prison inmates who reside in Ohio's Southern District, the federal court jurisdiction that covers the southern half of the state.

The Department of Justice has pushed courts to make it easier for people leaving prison to reintegrate into society. The DOJ says people fresh out of prison often face problems getting a job and housing, registering for school, or even opening bank accounts.
